The First Meeting

The first meeting of the Pleasant Hill R-III Demonstration Classroom Cadre was Friday, September 18, 2009. The following strategies were discussed:
  • Word Walls
  • QAR (Question-Answer-Relationship)
The teachers will select the strategy they want to implement in their classroom for the next six weeks. The teachers will open their classrooms for others in the buildings to observe one day each week. The Demonstration Classroom teachers will have the opportunity to blog about their experiences and to stay in contact with the other Cadre teachers throughout the district.

  1. I finished up on my first attempt at using word walls. Students were respectful and helped in discussing the words they were able to come up with links to their world for one of the word even though I could sense that they were kind of wondering, "what is she doing?" I also chose the latin phrase Carpe Diem because it is the title of one of the books on our state award list. I am wondering as a librarian who only occassionally really leads a true classroom session how this will look as the year progresses. I am still thinking through the 12 contacts with the word to get the words into their vocabulary.

  2. I have been using a word wall, but decided to 'bump' it up. I have added more vocabulary words we have been reading with our reading series. One day, I decided to put about a dozen of the words we have been using repeatedly onto word strips and then spread them out on the floor. Each student made a ball from the recycle box. We took turns tossing the ball to the word cards. When the ball landed on a card, students read the word and used it in a sentence. Students seemed to have fun with the change in going over vocabulary.

  3. I used my word wall today to have the students divide our current vocabulary words into positive, negative, or neutral categories. This was an oral activity but I physically moved the words from one part of the cork board to another when we decided what their connotations were. This gave another exposure to the words besides just defining them. It also made the students accountable for a list of words and definitions they should have been keeping for the last three weeks.

  4. I have made a word ceiling instead of wall. I think kids like that they have to look to the ceiling when referring to words- it's something different. I am wondering how long I should leave each group of words up? We will be referring to all words throughout the school year.

  5. My students are becoming more dependant on the word wall. I am writing less words in their dictionary because they know that the word is already on the word wall. Our words are written on different types of paper and in different colors. The common question from my First Graders now is, "What color is ____ on the word wall." They will go back to their desk, find the first letter of their word, and look for the color that has their word written on it. I will hear my students helping each other during writing. You will students going to the word wall and pointing out words for their friends or reading off the letters so their friend can write it down. We got a new student this week and one of the first thing my kids asked for was to put his name on the word wall so they could write it in their journal and dictionary. I love my word wall, our classroom would not be the same without it! :)
